On 10 September 2014, Jean-Claude Juncker, the President-elect of the next EU Commission, appointed Margrethe Vestager as the new EU Competition Commissioner. If Juncker’s Commission is approved by the European Parliament in October, the new Commission will take effect in November.

Ms Vestager was until this role, the Deputy Prime Minister of Denmark representing the Danish Social Liberal Party in the coalition headed by Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt (who herself received greater international recognition when famously posing for a ‘selfie’ photograph with David Cameron and Barack Obama at Nelson Mandela’s funeral). Ms Vestager held public office previously as the Danish Minister of the Economy between 2011 and 2014 and before that, as the Danish Minister of Education between 1998 and 2001.

Ms Vestager will replace Joaquin Almunia who will leave office having either reached a settlement with Google or leaving Vestager to inherit the long running and largest competition dispute since the Microsoft case of the 1990s.
